lyrics

Sapling Heart

I faintly can recall the open earth
The tender womb of soil tilled for my home
And gentle hands that cradled me at birth
And planted me beneath the peat and loam

But I drank deep the darkness underneath
And lost my appetite for heaven’s tears
I grew new thorns from every limb and leaf
To tear the hands that held the pruning shears

So deftly I was cut back to the root
My vain pursuit of manhood shorn away
And green, my sapling heart could not refuse
The graces of the sunlight and the rain

The mettle of a man will surely show
In whether he will shrivel up or grow
